About the Hotel

The Mistley Thorn Hotel High Street, Mistley, United Kingdom, CO11 1HE

The Mistley Thorn is a historic coaching inn built in 1723, situated in the coastal village of Mistley. It features award-winning cuisine from American-born executive chef Sherri Singleton, focusing on seasonal local produce. Guests can enjoy elegant accommodations directly across from the River Stour, near notable landmarks like Mistley Towers. The hotel's location is significant for its connection to the 18th Century spa development once envisioned for Mistley by Paymaster General Richard Rigby.

Location

The Mistley Thorn is located just two minutes' walk from Mistley Station, which provides direct train services to Colchester, Harwich, and London Liverpool Street. The surrounding area boasts historical significance, including Mistley Towers, and is an ideal base for exploring Constable Country. For those driving, the hotel is easily accessible via the A12, roughly 70 km from London Stansted Airport.

Rooms

The Mistley Thorn offers 14 individually designed rooms and suites that emphasize uncluttered elegance. Superior Rooms feature super king beds, some of which can be twinned and are equipped with luxurious bathrooms including overhead power showers. Classic and Cosy Rooms vary in size and are designed to accommodate singles, couples, and families, with some rooms offering stunning views of the estuary.

Eat & Drink

Dining at The Mistley Thorn showcases a seasonal menu featuring local seafood, such as year-round Mersea oysters and Colchester natives during their season. An all-day Sunday Lunch highlights traditional roast Suffolk beef alongside seafood and vegan options. The wine list includes lesser-known European varieties, available for purchase at the Thorn's wine merchants next to the cookshop.

Leisure & Business

Guests can unwind with a drink from the bar or enjoy afternoon tea with homemade scones and clotted cream. For leisure activities, the hotel provides bicycle rentals through Cool Pedals, facilitating exploration of the surrounding countryside. Additionally, the hotel’s location offers guests close proximity to scenic walking routes, including a path along the River Stour to iconic Flatford Mill.

Our stay at the hotel was wonderful! The rooms had a very comfy bed, and the lovely hot shower was perfect after braving the foul weather during our weekend. The view of the estuary added a special touch. The location was fantastic, situated in a pleasant restaurant and beautiful area, close to the train station on the characterful Mistley waterfront. The dining experience, especially with the best fried mushrooms I have ever eaten, was a highlight. Overall, a great stay with a few minor drawbacks.
